Do You Have What It Takes To Be a College Athlete?

Here’s a simple list of questions to see how prepared you are for recruiting. There are no right or wrong answers but these are all things you are going to have to learn about and have your own answers to as part of the recruiting process. V-M can help you with the answers to these questions.

1. Do you have the athletic skills required to compete in college?
Have you had anyone objective provide an accurate skill assessment?
Do you know what level to target yourself based on your skills and size?

2. Do you have the academic credentials to meet the NCAA Eligibility standards for D I and D II players?
Do you know the combination of grades and test scores they require?

3. Do you think you can handle an academic load, given the time commitments you will need to make to training, conditioning, practices, competitions, and travel?
Do you know what academic resources are available to help you at the schools you're interested in?

4. Is it important to you that you're an impact player or are you content to just be part of the team?
Are you taking that into consideration when you choose which level of schools to target?

5. Do the schools interested in you for your sport also have the other characteristics you are looking for in a college experience?
Do the schools you've put on your list have those characteristics?
Have you even thought through what characteristics (other than the sports program) are important to you?

6. Can you afford it?
Do you know how to get the financial aid you will need?

7. Do you know how serious the college coaches you are talking to are about you?
Do you know where you stand on their depth chart for your position?

8. Do you know what to put into the hands of coaches to make your case and separate yourself from the crowd?
Have you posted your information online?
Have you sent out letters to the coaches you're interested in to direct them to this information?

9. Do you know what's expected on a campus visit?
Do you have a list of questions for both the coaching staff and the other players?

10. Do you know how to decide which offer to accept if you have more than one?
Do you know about likely letters, letters of intent, and early admissions?

For some students, a high school athletic scholarship is their best chance of getting a quality education. According to recent studies, the yearly cost of attending a public four-year university is $6,185, while private universities average an incredible $23,712 per annum. While traditional student aid and loan programs can help, student-athletes will want to put themselves in the best positions possible to receive athletic scholarships to the schools of their choice.

Some of the top universities in the U.S. are NCAA Division I and Division II schools, including Ivy Leaguers like Harvard and Yale. A high school athletic scholarship to one of these schools not only leads to time out on the court or field, but also access to one of the finest educations in the country. Does this sound like an impossible dream? It doesn't have to be.

High School Athletic Scholarships Are Increasing Each Year

There are plenty of high school athletic scholarships available from colleges - about 150,000, equaling more than $1 billion - but they won't come looking for you or your student. Instead, the student-athlete hoping for a scholarship has to make sure he or she stands out from the pack and catches recruiters' and coaches' eyes. Fortunately, funding for athletic programs continues to rise (according to USA Today, athletic budgets typically rose by 25 percent from 1995 to 2001), increasing a student-athlete's chances.

You can get your - or your student's - athletic prowess in front of recruiters and coaches from across the country by creating a profile.

MyiHigh.com and Varsity Mentoring are the ultimate resources for student-athletes, coaches, recruiters, fans and more. Post stats, pictures and video to showcase your abilities and increase your chances of getting a high school athletic scholarship.

College recruiting services can be a great way to get the notoriety and recognition you deserve. Beyond getting you attention from college-level coaches and athletic directors, college recruiting services can also help you earn scholarships or financial aid for playing on a team. Many players shy away from recruiting services because they're not sure whether they're ready for NCAA action, but it's important to remember that the most important things these services offer are options.

Look into College Recruiting Services

The range of services that college recruiting services offer can vary dramatically. Some services will contact coaches and staffers on your behalf, while others will help you find schools that are seeking players of your caliber. We offer an entirely different take on college recruiting services. We let you brand yourself by creating a unique profile that includes player statistics, video and info.

Then, instead of going after recruiters, you can let the recruiters come to you. College coaches can register with our partners services and use their extensive network to seek out players that meet their exact criteria. The benefits to both parties are clear: recruiters can find the best talent from all corners of the U.S. and high school athletes can focus their attention on the schools that need exactly what they offer.

Too many athletes waste their already limited time seeking out contact with schools that simply aren't looking for players in their position or with their skill set.
